Take Lloyds chief's optimism over jobs with 'pinch of salt', warns union

A UNION said a bank chief executive's encouraging comments over job cuts had to be taken with a "pinch of salt."

Lloyds chief executive Eric Daniels has warned the 1.5 billion cost-saving programme now under way would lead to staff reductions.

But, he hoped the majority would be through natural wastage or limited voluntary redundancy programmes.

Lloyds Union assistant general secretary Steve Tatlow he was not surprised with the statement.

"The mantra is that it is going to be voluntary – but can that be delivered?

"It is easy to say 'we want cuts to be voluntary and through natural wastage' but what if a calls centre is closed with 700 jobs?

"There is a credible gap between what is said and what is delivered and it has to be taken with a pinch of salt."

Mr Tatlow said it was disgraceful that thousands of ordinary staff members have had their expected bonus payments put in doubt by Government intervention.

The Lloyds Banking Group wants to pay bonuses but the Government is looking at remuneration packages following the public outcry over massive "fat-cat" payouts.

Mr Tatlow said low-paid workers who have part of their pay deferred as bonus should be treated differently than richly-rewarded senior executives who made decisions which lost a lot of money.

Around 6,500 staff work for Lloyds Banking Group in Calderdale which was formed when Lloyds TSB took over HBOS in January.
