Take your pick of bonfires

CALDERDALE's skies will be lit up as spectacular firework displays take place across the district.

Thousands will flock to organised events across the area to celebrate bonfire night this coming weekend.

Two big Calderdale events are ringing the changes this year to attract more families.

For the first year Elland Round Table's bonfire at Hullen Edge Park, Elland, will have a children's firework display as well as the main spectacle.

A youngster from West Vale Primary School, Greetland, will be lighting the bonfire with a remote ignition.

Pupils have been entering a competition to design a fire safety poster and, as well as pressing the trigger, the student will also have their idea published in night's programme.

Neil Worthington, from Elland Round Table, said: "We wanted to try and push the safety aspect.

"There are too many accidents at unorganised events so come to our display because you won't see any better fireworks and all the money goes to local charity.

"The display this year is the biggest and best we have ever put on."

The children's firework display will be at 6pm on Saturday, with the bonfire lit at 6.15pm and the main display will be at 7pm.

Admission is 4 for adults and 1 for children.

And as reported in the Courier last week, Hebden Bridge Round Table bonfire will be the first in Yorkshire to feature organic food only.

Keith Best, from the round table, said: "We really wanted to offer visitors a treat and this really will be something special."

The move is part of the organisers's attempts to rebrand the Calder Holmes Park bonfire, which has previously had problems with anti-social behaviour, as a family event. There will not be big fun fair and opening and closing times have been brought forward.

It usually attracts around 10,000 spectators.

The park will be open from 4pm with the lighting at 6.30pm. Children's fireworks start at 7pm and main fireworks at 8pm.

The bonfire at the Horse and Jockey, Highroad Well, will be lit at 6pm on Saturday with the fireworks ignited at 7pm.

At Crow Nest Golf Club, Brighouse, the bonfire will be lit at 6.30pm on Saturday and guests are invited to bring their own fireworks.

On Sunday, Brighouse Juniors Football Club will host Disco Inferno, a bonfire and a disco at their Broad Oak headquarters, Halifax Road, Brighouse.

The gates at the ground open at 4pm, the bonfire will be lit at 5pm and there will be a fireworks display at 6.30pm.

Advance ticket entry only, 3 for adults and 1 for children. Tickets are available from the club house in match days, HP Stores in Granny Hall Lane, and St Chad's Primary School, Hove Edge.
