Taking on the world: Windsurfer Connor, 15, going for gold

CALDERDALE windsurfing sensation Connor Bainbridge has won a place to compete in the World Youth Championships next month.

Connor, 15, of Trimmingham Road, Warley, Halifax, is one of six British athletes going for gold at the championships in Turkey.

The 6ft 3in youngster has long been tipped as a future star and is currently ranked third in the country.

Mum Sharon Bain-bridge, who will be travelling to Turkey with Connor, said: "We are all very proud of him and it is a real achievement.

"Connor has been working very hard and is totally committed.

"He is constantly competing all over the country and has been doing a lot of strength training as well.

"But he loves it more than ever."

Connor, a pupil at Crossley Heath School, Halifax, will be competing in the under 17s category.

Since taking up windsurfing at nine, his reputation has rocketed.

In 2007 he joined the Great Britain National Junior Squad and last year was awarded a place in the National Youth Squad – two years early.

He also trains with Halifax Sailing Club at Wainstalls, Halifax, where he can be seen perfecting the Vulcan – a daredevil 180-degree spin through the air.
