Team (and dog) do the Peaks
AN adventurous group of local volunteers – and their dog – helped raise money for cash-strapped pensioners.
The team, including Hopey the dog, completed the gruelling Three Peaks (UK) Challenge in 24 hours to raise money for Age Concern's Pensioners in Need campaign.
The trip involved scaling the three highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales, beginning at the foot of Ben Nevis at 6am on Saturday morning, then conquering Scafell Pike, before ending 24 hours later at the peak of Snowdon.
Andrew Fearnley, the team's leader, is a member of the Community Action Team for Calderdale and Kirklees Age Concern.
He said: "We want to raise the money because as things stand one in four of our local pensioners are living in poverty and need support. Age Concern are well placed to help give this support as we offer over twenty specialized services for older people."
Some of the six-strong team prepared for the event by completing the recent Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge while others are keen fell runners and fitness trainers.
The group hopes to raise around 1,000.
