The experts are coming to help with Halifax Renaissance

A WORLD-RENOWNED group of architects, urban planners and conservationists are to visit Calderdale to offer their expertise on the ongoing Halifax Renaissance Programme.

The Urban Panel will be guided round the town's most significant sites, including Eureka, Dean Clough, Somerset House, Shaw Lodge Mill and the Piece Hall, before offering advice on how developments can make the most of the town's heritage.

The 20 experts, from English Heritage and the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, have helped on similar regeneration projects in Sheffield, Nottingham, York and Brighton.

Adrian Rose, Calderdale Council's business and economy manager, said: "It's an honour for Halifax to be selected for a visit because clearly these are people with ideas worth listening to.

"The visit is recognition for what has already been achieved here in terms of conservation and development but we also have a very clear vision for the future – and hopefully the panel will be able to offer us an outside opinion on that vision.

"They are here as critical friends, whose advice will be invaluable."

The group will arrive on October 7. Over two days they will take in places like People's Park, Beacon Hill, the Shay Stadium and Halifax Town Hall before writing up a report.

They are then expected to return within five years to see the progress made.

Chris Smith, of English Heritage, said: "A masterplan for Halifax and some of its key attractions is currently being explored by the council and the panel are keen to offer advice on how the town's rich and varied heritage can contribute to its future prosperity."
