Their garden gets royal touch

PUPILS had a visit from a royal gardening guru.

Ian Powell, former head gardener at Windsor Castle and Kew Gardens, went to Northowram Primary School to help children take advantage of the summer weather.

The youngsters won a school greenhouse and a visit from the horticultural expert in a competition organised by Focus DIY.

As well as having the greenhouse installed, the pupils were able to chat to Mr Powell about how the healthy food which will be grown in it can contribute to a balanced diet.

The children plan to expand their thriving gardening club and grow produce all year round.

The greenhouse will extend the growing season, allow the club to grow a wider variety of vegetables and give them more space.

All produce will go directly into healthy school meals.

Head teacher Katy Brierley said: "I want children to experience the pleasure of growing and then eating a wide variety of vegetables straight from the plot. I want to nurture the gardeners of the future and am quite sure that with the greenhouse, in full view of the rest of the school community, we will encourage others to take an interest as well."

Jill Gater, from Focus DIY, said: "We were really impressed by the calibre of entry from Northowram Primary School and are sure they will put the greenhouse to good use."

Ian Powell said: "Gardening is an activity that every child can participate in to make a positive difference to their health.

"You don't have to be the fastest runner or the best football player to enjoy it. It also diverts the mind from stress, meaning children will be healthy and happy inside and out."
