Thieves rip memorial plaques off wall in chapel garden

THIEVES have stolen 42 brass plaques from a memorial garden.

The plaques, placed by families in memory of loved ones, were ripped from a wall in the grounds of Blackley Baptist Chapel, Blackley Road, Elland.

They date back to when the garden was opened in 1975.

In recent years plastic plaques have been used which the thieves left.

Joe Braithwaite, secretary of the property and finance committee, returned from holiday and said he was sickened to learn of the thefts during the last fortnight.

"The plaques are no good to anyone else," he said."We would hope a reputable metal merchant would not buy them.

"It is a despicable situation when thieves resort to taking something as small as these plaques.

"They are worth little and it is very upsetting."

Mr Braithwaite said the thieves' would probably add the plaques to a collection of brass to be melted down and he didn't expect them to be found and returned.

Sgt Louise Garner said officers would do what they could to find those responsible.

"Thefts like this are very traumatic for people," she said.

Often, searches of property turn up stolen goods from other suspected crimes and Sgt Garner didn't rule out the plaques being found. She urged anyone with information to contact Brighouse Police Station on 01484 405251.

Two sun dials have also been stolen from the memorial garden in recent years and the chapel, like other places of worship across the district, has previously had stone taken.
