Three stone down and I'm off the tablets!
DIABETES sufferer Conrad Lumb has been able to ditch his medication thanks to some healthy lifestyle changes.
The 65-year-old from Carr Field Drive, Luddenden, signed up to the Upbeat scheme last year and has lost three stone.
And he has improved his health so much, he no longer needs to take the tablets he was on to treat his diabetes.
Mr Lumb, who is backing the Courier's Join Our Club campaign, said: "I've got a lot more stamina now and I've been doing a lot more in the garden.
"There are lots of things I'm doing that I wouldn't have been able to this time last year."
He decided to take action over his health last June after he realised he was feeling tired out after only a little physical effort.
As well as joining Slimming World in Hebden Bridge with his wife Ruth, he went to his GP, who recommended the Upbeat scheme.
It is a joint project between Calderdale Council and NHS Calderdale and is for people like Mr Lumb with diabetes, or suffering heart disease or who are overweight.
Over 10 weeks they offer exercise classes at venues across Calderdale which begin with a gentle warm up followed by low-intensity, circuit-based or aerobic activities to improve circulation, balance and strength.
Everyone is encouraged to work at their own pace and there are opportunities to take up walking, swimming and exercise to music. There is also advice on weight loss and healthy eating.
Mr Lumb said: "It's very relaxed and they are a good crowd of people who go. Don't be put off by going to the gym because you think everyone is going to be lycra-clad. The Upbeat classes are good fun."
