CHILDREN'S PET SHOW
RABBITS set the pace in this year's Children's Pet Show at Todmorden Show - but they faced trophy winning competition from an African Land Snail named Brian.
Section co-secretary Karen Andrews said there had been interest from every age group and alongside pets like rabbits and hamsters, who were popularly represented pets, there were truly unusual pets like Brian the snail.
"It's gone very well and the children have shown a really good knowledge of their pets. We very much appreciate that children have supported us on our return this year," she said.
Judge Brian Heal said the pets entered were of a very high standard and the numbers were good, especially as there had not been a show for a while, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
The tent was very busy through the day with the added attraction of a hamster section sharing their space this year.
The Shona Fern Cup for best rabbit went to Zoe, owned by Fiona Mitchell. Rabbits also took trophies for their owners in two other awards. The Bill and Elsie McCrate Cup went to Daphne and her owner Jessica Hunter and the Maureen Cryer Cup, which is presented in the owner age group five to 10 years, went to Muffin owned by Poppy Rigby.
Hamsters Misty and Fudge won their owner Sophie Thornsby the Trevor Cryer Cup, which is presented in the age group 11 to 15 years age group, and the Stanley and Vincent Greenwood Memorial Trophy for most unusual pet went to Brian the African Land Snail owned by Sam Bargh.
The class winners were as follows.
Class 1 (age group five to 10 years): 1, Jade Beard with her hens Poland and Cheeky; 2, Jack Cryer with his guinea pigs Tigs and Nibs; 3, Alice Stephenson and her hamster Jack.
Class 2 (age group 11 to 15 years): 1, Gillian Abbott with her rabbit Petal; 2, Holly McConnell with her hamster Arya; 3, Hermione Elam-Morley with her guinea pig Ada.
