DESPITE the downpour, the Companion Dog Show run at Todmorden Show by Dogs Can Do was a popular attraction even if judge, competitors and spectators alike were dripping wet!
The first time this format of event has been held at the show, with a large "fun" element running alongside pedigree and handling classes, there were about 80 entries from a surprisingly large area, said Sue McCafferty, of Dogs Can Do.
"We had entries from far afield including someone from Oxfordshire, a couple of entries from Cheshire and places closer to Todmorden such as Hebden Bridge, Whitworth and Halifax and other Yorkshire towns including Heckmondwike, Bingley and Guiseley near Leeds," she said.
"We were glad we got our display in when it was dry but even when it started raining we kept on regardless.
"One girl who had entered her dog in the waggiest tail class said he'd lost his wag due to the rain and all credit to our judge Allan Talbot - he was dripping by the time we finished!" she said.
Sue said that companion dog shows were great fun because they offered classes other than the pedigree classes where people could enter their pets. These were great fun and the public enjoyed them.
The best in show pedigree dog was Dino, a Dalmation owned by Kay Martland. Reserve best in show pedigree dog was Perry owned by Emma Ashworth. The best in show for the novelty classes went to Edna, owned by Sally Bartle, with reserve best in show for those classes going to Molly, owned by Tania Maguire.
Class winners were as follows:
Pedigree classes
Any variety puppy (6 to 12 months old), Jet with Nathan Scott; any variety hound or gundog, Star with Stephen Hoyle; any variety terrier or toy, Perry with Emma Ashworth; any variety working, utility or pastoral, Dino with Kay Martland; any variety open, Timon with Roderick Smith.
Handling classes
Junior handling (6 to 16 years old): Boo and Mr Grantham (the entry was made in the young handler's mother's name, Hannah Grantham); adult handling, Hogan and Julie Nelson.
Novelty classes
Any variety veteran (over seven years old): Barley with Mrs McKinnon; pretty bitch, Mollie with Tania Maguire; handsome dog, Eddie with Chloe Taylor; waggiest tail, Jess with Julie Nelson; best trick, Edna with Sally Bartle; best six legs, Hogan with Julie Nelson; friendliest dog, Daisy with Ruth Pickard; fancy dress, Tilly - as a fairy - with Amy Stokes.
Companion Dog Club novelty classes
Best condition, Lambert with D. Richards; most appealing expression, Phoebe with Wendy Roberts.
