Town Hall's big earners face axe

SENIOR managers at Calderdale Council could lose their jobs in a huge cost-cutting exercise.

The cull could affect many of the highest earners.

Leaders of the three main political groups say major changes are needed to ensure the council provides essential services.

Conservative leader Stephen Baines said: "There will be some funadmental changes in the way the council operates.

"It is all to do with management and looking for better ways of working."

Liberal Democrat councillors recommended such a review nearly two years ago.

Group leader Janet Battye said it failed to get backing then but seemed it would now have its day.

She said: "It is something we have been wanting the council to do for years."

Labour leader Tim Swift will put a recommendation to Wednesday's council meeting saying "there is cross-party support for a review of senior management" and asking for proposals for a new structure.

He said: "Such a review should seek to achieve greater efficiency and more effective delivery of the council's objectives."

There are the equivalent of 4,200 full-time staff on the council payroll providing social, housing, children and educational services, road and transport, cultural, environmental and planning services.

Of the 140 million it costs to provide these services, about two thirds goes on wages and pensions.

Arrangements are in hand to replace two 100,000 directors – Ian Thompson, regeneration, and Carol White, young people's services, who are to leave the council before Christmas.
