Town hall step closer to bright new future

A COMMUNITY association set up to bring new life to Hebden Bridge Town Hall has been given charitable status, so it can create a new public hall and function room.

The search is now on for volunteers with professional property and building experience to join the project team and someone with fund-raising experience.

"This historic listed building at the heart of community life has sadly has become rather run-down in recent years but has been identified as a potential pilot for asset transfer, a policy supported by the Government to put control of public build- ings into the hands of accountable community-based trusts," said trustee Andrew Bibby.

"Another longer-term plan is to create a small business centre next to the landmark building."

Calderdale Council has still to formally agree to hand over the building which used to house a council chamber and offices and the town's fire service.

Community services spokes-man Ian Cooper said the new Hebden Bridge Community Association was offering the town a great opportunity.

"As an independent charity, it will have the opportunity to access grants funding which are not available to the local authority.

"Although there are still decisions to be made and details to be worked out, we are excited about the ideas they have for the building," said Coun Cooper (Con, Todmorden).
