Usman's award for outstanding work
A HALIFAX teenager and member of the Youth Parliament has been given a national award.
Usman Ali, a 16-year-old pupil at Crossley Heath, Halifax, has won the prestigious MWH/UK Youth Parliament Andrew Rowe Award for his work representing young people.
The award for outstanding commitment to representing the views of young people, was presented to the young parliamentarian at Portcullis House, Westminster.
Andy Hamflett, chief executive of the UK Youth Parliament, said: "The UK Youth Parliament Awards give recognition for the fabulous work of some brilliant young people. It's nice to take a moment to thank and reward them."
Usman, of King Cross, Halifax was one of a 12- strong delegation which travelled to Geneva, Switzerland and presented a report to the United Nations' Committee on the rights of the child.
He won his place by entering a competition to write an essay on children's rights. He said the trip was a valuable and exciting experience.
He has also organised an event to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the universal declaration of human rights.
Usman, whose term of office will come to an end this month, said: "The past 16 months have been a phenomenal and unforgettable experience for me.
"I've seen the Youth Parliament go from strength to strength over my term of office and hopefully this will be evident during the elections this month."
