Village gets new 'Eye' sculpture: Centrepiece ready to be unveiled

SCULPTOR Nicholas Moreton's Eye and the Needle will be unveiled at the weekend in St Michael's Square, Mytholmroyd.

The sculpture, funded by Yorkshire Forward and Calderdale Council, is being installed in the pedestrian area of the square, near to the River Calder.

The community was involved in the selection of both the artist and design.

A granite bench supports the table structure, and includes a reference to Mytholmroyd-born poet Ted Hughes.

Mr Moreton described his work as consisting of two main elements referencing local trade and the church, one a horizontal plane of pure granite, the other a vertical axis made from Cor-ten steel.

"By generating people's interest I am sure the creation and implementation of this public space will be a huge success," he said.

Calderdale Council's portfolio holder for the economy and the environment Amanda Byrne said she was grateful for the support given to the project.

"Mytholmroyd can be proud of its new centrepiece, which provides the finishing touch to the new square," she said.

It will be unveiled on Sunday at 3pm by the Bishop of Wakefield Stephen Platten.
