Violent crime down over Christmas

A POLICE crackdown to keep festive revellers safe has seen violent crime slashed.

The number of reports of violence in Halifax town centre over the Christmas period is down 11 per cent on last year, say officers.

Acting Inspector Colin Skeath of Halifax central neighbourhood policing team, which led the push, said: "The town centre has been busy over the last few weeks.

"Hopefully these figures will encourage public trust in the police who are continually striving to make Halifax a safer place."

As reported by the Courier, police have been running special operations to tackle disorder and improve safety for people enjoying nights out in Halifax.

They included targeting women aged between 16 and 30 with safety messages and checks to ensure traders are not selling alcohol to under 18s.

Officers from the neighbourhood and roads policing teams worked with the town centre marshalls and Halifax Street Angels on the campaign.

The extra patrols boosted the work carried out all year round by Operation Famous and two other operations aimed at tackling under age drinking and helping vulnerable people in the town centre.
