Visitors pack leisure centre for Change Direction business and jobs event
A BROAD mix of jobseekers, people looking for money advice, and entrepreneurs were all at this year's Courier Jobs and Business event.
Change Direction, supported by Yorkshire Forward, Growing Calderdale and Business Link, took a new approach from the traditional annual jobs event to offer full recession support.
Fiona Thurlbeck, strategic resources manager for Calderdale Council's Growing Calderdale, said: "We were looking at different audiences this time.
"There are people with skills but unfortunately because of the recession they can't use them so they are wanting to know how to diversify. In the past we didn't get people like that.
"The event was about giving people a positive experience.
"One of the main differences this year was the main supporter was Yorkshire Forward – we needed that extra boost."
The main hall in North Bridge Leisure Centre, Halifax, was split into four zones, offering advice on skills and training, support and services, business and enterprise and jobs and careers.
Visitors crowded round the stalls throughout the day – some looking for advice from Business Link on how to set up a business and others in the support zone asking for help with their finances.
The jobs board displayed vacancies ranging from teaching assistants and ICT technicians to local authority summer rangers and telesales.
Guy Williams, debt adviser for the charity Debt Advice Network, was kept busy with money problem inquiries.
"We had people who had been put on short-time hours by their employers and have still got the month's bills to pay. We also had students in debt."
Betterware, DH Homecare, Asda and Avon were among those advertising jobs.
Sally Hoyle, area sales manager for Avon, said it was the first time they had recruited at an event.
Richard Croft, training assessor and advisor at Kits Training, said the event was a good way to highlight the role of apprenticeships in the economy.
One jobseeker visiting the Halifax Opportunities Trust stand was asked to interview straight away for a hospital cleaning job.
