'Volunteering got us back on right track'

YOUNG people have been battling stereotypes through volunteering in the community.

Sixteen to 25-year-olds have been involved with fund-raising activities, environmental projects, care work and mentoring as part of Voluntary Action Calderdale's "Vinvolved" programme.

Aodhan Molloy, 18, of Sowerby Bridge, said: "Volunteering is fun and gives you something to do rather than hang about on the streets.

"One of the positive things about it is getting people to realise that not all young people are thugs."

Samantha Cawood, 23, of Sowerby Bridge, said: "Me and my mate were going through a bit of a rough time and it helped get us back on the right track and gave us something to concentrate on. It's nice to help other people.

"We've done residential visits and have helped to promote the parties, events and even baking for the homeless.

"My advice to young people would be just to get out there and do it."

"Soon we're hoping to get into schools and hopefully get more young people involved in volunteering."

Around 150 volunteers were presented with certificates for completing 50 or 100 hours' work in the community at Las Cuevas Tapas Bar, Halifax.

Sarah Ward, youth volunteer development manager, said: "This evening was about recognising and rewarding young people for the work they do and the free time they have given up to help other people in Calderdale."

The Mayor of Calderdale, Arshad Mahmood, also attended the celebrations.
