Warning sounded on cash scams
A FRESH warning about conmen is being made across Calderdale.
Police are urging people to be cautious about handing over money before a service has been delivered and to report any suspicious activity.
They also say people should take care at home, not opening the door to anyone they are not expecting to call.
Police said: "Some companies will call round unannounced. If you are at all unsure, ask the caller to go away and for an appointment to be arranged by letter if you are interested.
"Never feel under pressure – you are under no obligation to let them in. If you feel threatened, call the police.
"If you are expecting a visit, check to see who it is by looking through your front door or by using a door viewer if you have one.
"Only open the door when you have put the chain on. Make sure you check their identification and if you have any doubts ask them to wait whil you call the company."
A couple from Wheatley in Halifax claim they were phoned by conmen pretending to be from money-transfer firm Western Union, saying they were owed over 3,700 in "hidden bank charges.", and asked them to bring 99 to access the money.
But a spokeswoman for Western Union said they do not work with banks.
