We don't want your bottles: Sita refuses club's five tons of glass

A NIGHTCLUB boss has been told he cannot recycle 14,000 bottles a week now Sita has taken over the waste collection contract in Calderdale.

Simon Jackson, of the Acapulco, Halifax, said for several years the club's bottles had been taken to the nearby recycling site at Lee Bank.

But Sita told him to take his latest load of bottles – weighing around five tons – elsewhere.

Mr Jackson said his company had taken a decision to recycle eight years ago and bought a trailer to store the bottles until he took them to the tip.

"We got no money out of it and there was no charge," said Mr Jackson.

"It is now about money and not about what we are supposed to do for the environment."

Mr Jackson said the Acapulco did not have a waste-disposal contract because initially they could not find a firm willing to recycle the bottles.

"If it was going to cost us money to get rid of the bottles, I wanted them to be recycled," said Mr Jackson.

"There are companies that will do that now but it is very expensive."

Mr Jackson said to continue recycling the bottles would mean a lengthy motorway journey that added to the expense and was against the environmental principle of reducing carbon footprints.

He said Sita told him they were not responsible for commercial waste, only household.

"But over three nights we produce more glass than the average person over three years," said Mr Jackson.

A Sita spokeswoman said it was a council-owned site and the authority made the operating decisions that formed the contract.

Calderdale Council's waste manager Malcolm Akroyd confirmed the long-standing agreement had ceased and the authority was not responsible for the collection or disposal of waste from commercial premises.

"All businesses make arrangements with private contractors for the removal and disposal of commercial waste from their premises," he said.

"In this case, the business concerned had a direct arrangement with the previous operators of the Halifax waste transfer site, Focsa Services (UK) Ltd.

"The proprietor will need to make alternative arrangements for the disposal of commercial waste with Sita UK, the new operators, or some other alternative."
