Web idol Catherine's session in the studio

SINGING star Catherine Matthew – who was crowned the Courier Web Idol winner – has spent the day as a recording artist in Halifax.

The 21-year-old created an album of seven songs in a studio session at Calder Recordings in Mytholmroyd – one of her prizes for winning the Web Idol contest in November.

She recorded her winning song, And I Am Telling You, made famous by Jennifer Hudson, as well as classic hits such as Dusty Springfield's Son Of A Preacher Man.

Catherine, of Delph Street, Halifax, said: "It was really good fun but quite daunting. I felt more comfortable singing in public.

"But once I got into it, it was really good fun. I found it interesting watching them mix the songs into a CD. It was such a great opportunity for me."

She now has two copies of her CD but is planning to order about 40 more – although she isn't sure what she will do with them.

"I haven't a clue what I'm going to do with the CDs.

"I'm going to give some to family and friends. Everyone keeps asking if I'm going to send them off to music industry people but I don't know who to send them to."

Catherine, who works part time at Halifax market, now hopes to save some cash – including her 300 Web Idol prize – to pay for equipment to allow her to hold gigs around the area.

She said: "My ultimate dream is to make a living from singing.

"That's the only thing I've always wanted to do.

"The Courier competition has helped me so much. I had never been in a competition before and it has given me so much more confidence.

"A lot of people didn't know I could sing until Web Idol. I'm so pleased I entered.

"It's been such a great experience."
