Winning Song for Christmas choir get their recording day in the studio

A SCHOOL choir that won the Courier Christmas music contest is now recording its first CD.

The choir, made up of 40 Year 5 and 6 pupils from Elland C of E school, was put together three months ago by teaching assistant Jennifer Hastings especially for the Courier's Sing a Song for Christmas competition.

They won 200 of musical instruments and a chance to record a CD with a music company.

Mrs Hastings said: "It was very exciting for them.

"We kept having to stop and start again because someone would cough or move their chair, but we got there in the end. It was wonderful seeing them in the studio."

The choir sang four songs, including Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah and the hymn Seek Ye First.

The pupils were accompanied on piano by their former deputy head, Diane Hayward.

The choir was crowned champions in December after their rendition of Come and Join the Celebration received 6,331 votes – nearly 400 more than the second-placed choir, Salterhebble Junior and Infant School, Halifax. The school also won 200 of percussion instruments from 1st Floor Music, Bull Green, Halifax, which arranged the recording session.

Mrs Hastings said: "They presented all the items to us. There's tambourines, shakers, all sorts. It will make such a difference to our music lessons. Hopefully, the choir will keep going, even when the new pupils come through.

"We're still deciding what to do with the CD, but we can't wait to hear it," said Mrs Hastings.
