Workers walking back to happiness

WORKERS are walking their way to better health.

Mytholmroyd Walkers' Action is urging staff to stretch their legs during their lunch hours to get fit by launching walk@work routes.

It comes as the Courier runs its Join Our Club campaign, aimed at encouraging people to be more healthy.

Secretary of the walkers group Jill Liddington said: "Mytholmroyd is a major local employment centre. Our guess is that over 2,000 people work here."

Together with Calderdale Countryside Services, the group has created six walk at work routes that are accessible to most people.

One of the companies taking on the walking challenge is IT firm Tikit, based in New Road, Mytholmroyd.

Gwynneth Brumby, senior indexer at the firm said: "We work in a computer-based environment by the new town square so at lunchtimes it's brilliant to get out into the fresh air.

"Over the last few months we've been out trialling the walk@work routes and our suggestions have really been taken on board.

"So we can promise you that all six walks fit easily into a lunch break and are a great way of maintaining your healthy lifestyle."

The group has printed 4,000 copies of the new walk@work in Mytholmroyd leaflet thanks to funding from HBOS, Hebden Royd Town Council and legal information providers Sweet and Maxwell.

They are being handed out to all local employees to encourage them to get involved and will also be available from Mytholmroyd Community Centre, Mytholmroyd Library and local shops.

Jill added: "In addition we've designed large information boards to go up locally. We aim to have these in place in the key employment sites by the end of the summer."
