World Cup attacks up 6pc in Calderdale

POLICE have released a breakdown of the Calderdale figures for domestic violence across the county during the World Cup.

The numbers, obtained by the Courier following a Freedom of Information request, show there was a rise of almost six per cent compared with the same time last year, with 340 incidents reported during the tournament in this district.

As reported by the Courier, police had predicted domestic violence would surge during the football contest, and launched an awareness campaign to try to curb the wave of violence.

Angela Everson, joint chief executive at Halifax Women's Centre, said they get a lot of referrals from police and had also seen an increase during the World Cup.

"It was very positive to have a campaign to be pro-active and the Women's Centre was keen to support that campaign.

"We continue to support people affected by domestic violence at any time in Calderdale.

"If people want support they can call us on 01422 323339."

Figures for West Yorkshire showed the biggest increase was seen after England's defeat against Germany, when the number of reports went up by nearly 19 per cent for the same time last year.

This year's World Cup did see a fall in the number of victims compared with the tournament in 2006.
