You'll have to wait until January for answers on Lloyds merger, HBOS staff are told

DETAILS of the Lloyds TSB takeover of HBOS may not be revealed until the middle of January.

Answering questions at a public meeting last night, Rosa Wilkinson, head of public policy for Lloyds TSB, said: "It is frustrating but at the moment there are more questions than answers.

"As soon as we get a timetable for those answers, we will let you know."

She said it could be mid-January before details of the takeover were available.

"There is a compelling logic in this deal for both organisations, about being stronger together. It will bring together two organisations with incredible reputations within a difficult market place."

At the meeting, in Northgate House, Halifax, she talked about excitement within Lloyds TSB about bringing in the "dynamic environment" of HBOS.

David Isbell of Unite, responding to a call for monitoring by the Financial Services Authority, said: "We want proper policing of the financial services sector so this mess can never happen again."

MP Linda Riordan praised the professionalism of HBOS staff, saying Lloyds would be "absolutely crazy" not to take on the workforce after the proposed takeover goes through.

"They have carried on under tremendous pressure and not knowing what the future holds," she said. There was standing room only at the meeting organised by Mrs Riordan and Calder Valley MP Chris McCafferty.

Rosie Winterton, minister for Yorkshire and the Humber, said: "I am trying to make sure we are pressing the case at all levels for the importance of maintaining a strong presence in this area."
