Young eco warriors aim for top! Pupils set sights on plastic bottles

A SCHOOL recognised for its drive to help the environment is collecting thousands of plastic bottle tops.

Old Earth Primary School, Elland, is partnering a Halifax firm to divert the plastic waste away from landfill and into recycled products.

Pupils are collecting tops rather than bottles because they produce more weight in collection bags.

They hope to collect enough tops to qualify for a free picnic table or bench.

The school was recognised as a green school in the recent Courier community and environment awards.

Teacher Michael Anderson and a school council of "eco warriors" are pushing forward the "green" drive.

The school has a wind turbine, eight organic allotments, a full recycling programme and plans for solar panels on its roof.

Pupils were visited by Keith Hutchinson, the sales and marketing director of Iplas, which makes a range of maintenance-free products at its base in Hopwood Lane and which is building recycling partnerships with schools.

"We deal in 100 per cent plastic waste and our products sell to areas such as the construction industry and local authorities," he said.

These range from picnic tables to construction products to replace timber, concrete, or metals, such as bollards and fencing.

Iplas is developing kerb edging for use in building developments and provides industries with an economical and environmentally sustainable alternative to traditional materials.

It works alongside clients' materials technogoists and university research departments to develop products.

It is a leader in its field and experiencing rapid growth.

Mr Hutchinson expects business to quadruple year-on-year. It now employs 83 in Halifax.
