Young 'MPs' chosen: Two elected to Youth Parliament seats

MORE than 4,000 young people cast their votes in this year's Calderdale Youth Parliament elections.

A tense count at Halifax Town Hall revealed Shamaila Gul, 17, and Samuel Mitchell, 14, as the victors.

Shamaila, a pupil at Halifax High School, notched up 1,105 votes with a pledge to increase awareness of ethnic diversity in Calderdale.

Samuel, from Park Lane High School, who plans to bring younger people together with older generations to solve problems in the community, received 1,008 votes.

The pair will get training to represent the area's young people about the issues affecting them. They will hold their positions for the next two years.

Kyle Moore, 16, from Ryburn Valley High School got 791 votes and 17-year-old Blessing Eze, from Sowerby Bridge High School received 502, making them both deputies.

Also standing were Bradley Moore, 14, from Ryburn Valley High School and Andrew Greenwood, 17, from Greenhead College, who were pipped to the post with 477 and 463 votes respectively.

All the youngsters had managed an election campaign and canvassed votes from their peers, with ballot boxes placed in schools, pupil referral units and youth centres.

Retiring members Usman Ali, 16, and Nick Green, 15, helped with the vote count.

Anne Gomersall, Calderdale Council's senior participation worker for children and young people, said: "It was an electric atmosphere and we had a lot of support from council workers, councillors and the young people's families.

"I'm convinced they will do well."
