Youth band wins championship
Elland Silver Youth Band won the Action Medical Research Entertainment Championship of Great Britain at the Opera House Theatre, Blackpool.
Mr Murray Greig, principal trumpet of Opera North, put together an arrangement of Bizet's Opera Carmen.
Band musical director Samantha Harrison led the band to a five point lead and members' dressed in costumes which included percussionist and soprano soloist Sophie Greig as "Carmen" in a ball gown.
Judges Alan Morrison and Stan Lippeat awarded the band the following prizes: The Best Bass (tuba); outstanding soloist, solo trombone player Dan Eddison; most entertaining item, "The bull fight," first place for entertainment/musical content/and overall entertainment champions. Miss Harrison was judged "outstanding conductor."
