Zero tolerance for domestic violence bullies

THE Deputy Mayor of Calderdale, Nader Fekri, is proposing to make Calderdale the first in Britain to become a White Ribbon council.

The move would create an integrated plan to end domestic violence and it is set to be agreed on Wednesday.

The motion is being proposed by Coun Fekri (Lib Dem, Calder) in a bid to cut domestic violence, which affects one in four women in Calderdale.

He said: "The campaign has grown tremendously over the years and to become a White Ribbon district would be a brilliant next step in our fight against domestic violence.

"We are moving in the right direction but more needs to be done.

"The shocking truth is it takes up to 37 incidents of violence before some cases even make it to the courts.

"It is only a symbolic title, but developing the campaign will significantly help fight domestic violence."

White Ribbon has hosted a range of fund-raising events in the past few months. Most recently more than 25 men including politicians, mayors and even a Rugby League star clattered around Hebden Bridge in high heels to raise awareness.

Joan Taylor, a volunteer at the charity, said: "It is going really well and we are delighted at the support we are getting in Calderdale.

"We have just held our annual celebrations and hope we can go from strength to strength."
