THE council’s decision to sell the former Pitt Street education centre in Hebden Bridge without consultation was brought to the attention of the House of Lords.
Local Government Minister Baroness Hanham said the Localism Bill would hopefully prevent such things happening again.
“We know already that many communities have lost the use of buildings or land that were important to them because they were sold privately or without an interested community group having time to raise the necessary funds, such as an adult education centre in Calderdale.”
Campaigners raised £15,000 to try to save the Pitt Street centre in 2005 but it was sold by Calderdale Council for £171,000 to be converted into luxury flats.
The sale went on to cause a sit-in protest about the lack of affordable housing in the town.
