A man and a boy died last night in a major blaze at a house in South Yorkshire.

The nine-year-old boy and 44-year-old man died in the fire in Tennyson Close, Penistone, at around 6.30pm. An 11-year-old boy was last night in hospital in a critical condition suffering from life-threatening injuries.

Fire crews said flames had already spread through the house when they arrived at the scene. A team rescued the three casualties but two could not be saved.

A joint police and fire investigation into the cause of the blaze was launched last night and will continue today.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Our thoughts are with the family of those involved in this tragic incident.”
