A 51-year-old Calderdale man died after being taken ill during a diving trip.

Ian Woolston, 51, and another man set off from Eyemouth on the Scottish Borders yesterday afternoon (Sun).

He was underwater when he suddenly signalled he was returning to the surface.

A boat crew tried to resuscitate him for 30 minutes and he was airlifted by helicopter to Ninewells Hospital, Dunee.

A police spokesman said: “Lothian and Borders Police are investigating the sudden death of a man in his fifties after he took ill during a diving trip.

“Members of his group raised the alarm around 2.30pm.

“However, despite the best efforts of medical staff, he later passed away.

“Enquiries are ongoing into the full circumstances surrounding this death.”
