A man appeared in court yesterday following a stand-off with police at a Leeds supermarket.

Michael Palmer appeared before Leeds Magistrates’ Court Tuesday afternoon where he was remanded in custody to appear before the Crown Court next month.

Heavily-built Palmer, 32, of Brownhill Crescent, Harehills, spoke only to confirm his details during the five-minute hearing, where he was charged with affray, theft, assault and arson following an alleged stand-off with police at Sainsbury’s on Harehills Lane on Sunday.

Wearing a striped t-shirt, Palmer did not enter a plea during the hearing.

As reported, dozens of police officers rushed to the store in Harehills Lane on Sunday (June 16) afternoon.

Crowds of local residents gathered behind a police cordon between the Compton Road and Cowper Road junctions shortly before 1.30pm.

Police said a suspect gave himself up at around 6pm.
