A young driver from Sowerby Bridge is in Leeds General Infirmary after his car crashed on the Burdock Way, Halifax, at 12.45 am today.(Sat)
Halifax firefighters cut the casualty free from his Citroen Xsara which had mounted the grass verge and smashed into a street lamp on the approach to the Orange Tree roundabout.
Watch Commander Neil Pilling said the roof of the car was removed to enable the casualty to be freed.
Paramedics transferred him to hospital with suspected spinal injuries.
“It was quite a severe impact and quite difficult to extract him from the vehicle but we managed get him out in good time,” said Commander Pilling.
No other vehicles were involved and there were no passengers.
Police said the casualty was aged 21 and from the Sowerby Bridge area and his injuries were serious but not life-threatening.
