Martial Arts: Trio make grade
THREE members of Calderdale-based Team Taekwondo impressed at a recent grading event at Hipperholme and Lightcliffe High School.
Anneka Ambler (20), Jessica Darling (15) and Terri Lumb (16) put in top performances to finish first, second and third respectively from 28 participants.
Ambler and Lumb successfully passed their blue belt red tag while Darling passed her red belt.
During the grading test students had to perform Taekwondo moves appropriate to their grade, spar with each other, break boards and demonstrate defences against common attacks.
As a result of their successes, the Calderdale trio are now approximately a year away from testing for black belt.
Phillip Payne, 4th Dan Black Belt and Chief Instructor of Team Taekwondo said "I am really proud of the girls. They are an asset to the club and not only did they show that girls can perform just as good as boys in Martial Arts, they went one step further and scored higher than all the boys".|
The trio are no stranger to success. Lumb won silver at an International competition in Germany and gold at the British National Taekwondo Championships in 2007 while Darling won bronze and Ambler Silver at this year's National Championships.
The performance of the girls were not the only highlight as their classmates Chris Cocker (18) and Arran Greenwood also tasted success at the Ultimate Open Taekwondo Championships.
Greenwood, who is just nine years old, continued his recent good form winning his first gold medal in an open competition.
Cocker fought three matches to get to the final at the same competition only to lose out. This was only his second outing at senior level and the silver medal he won marks the highlight of his competitive career so far.
Cocker and Team Taekwondo team mate Andrew Greenwood (14) are currently preparing for their biggest challenge to date.
Both will take part in the first British International Taekwondo Championships in Manchester on November 1-2.
