Match preview: Chorley v FC Halifax Town
THIS time last year, Halifax Town were going into battle for their Blue Square Premier lives, blissfully unaware of what the immediate future held for them.
Tomorrow FC Halifax Town travel to Chorley knowing that they will be in Unibond One North for another season having failed in their bid to gain promotion at the first attempt.
On the face of it, there is little for the Town players to play for with sixth spot - one below the dotted line - the best they can now hope for.
But it provides one final chance for members of the current squad to grab a headline or two ahead of the appointment of a new permanent manager.
It may not be much, but it does at least give the game a little bit of an edge.
Chorley have had an unremarkable season with nine defeats at the ironically named Victory Park and games played out in front of an average of 249 fans.
They have, however, beaten title-chasers Skelmersdale United and Newcastle Blue Star on home soil which shows that they have something about them.
Like the Shaymen, they are playing under the temporary stewardship of a caretaker boss, although Phil Brown - no, not that one - has been offered the position on a permanent basis.
He is also pondering an offer to become assistant to former Chorley boss Tony Hesketh at Lancaster City.
Since Brown took charge, Chorley have drawn twice - against Salford and Bamber Bridge - and last weekend won 2-1 at Ossett Albion.
And he will be keen to impress his potential new employers further as he has indicated that he is ready to accept the position on a permanent basis.
When the sides met at the Shay in November, goals from Tony Barras, Ashley Stott and Paul Gedman gave Town a 3-1 win.
Barras and Stott are out while Gedman is still working his way back to fitness, although he could be handed a start.
Town have won eight times on their travels this season - a decent return by any standards and proof that seven draws and four defeats on home soil have done the real damage.
A win tomorrow and they would have picked up just three points fewer on the road than at the Shay.
