Match preview: Mossley v FC Halifax Town
FC Halifax Town face their biggest test of the season to date when they travel to second-placed Mossley tonight.
The Manchester-based side have got off to a flying start in the Unibond League Division One North with 12 points from their opening five matches.
And in frontman Mike Fish have a man clearly enjoying the form of his life with eight goals in the games the team has played so far this campaign.
His impressive run continued at the weekend when Mossley enjoyed a 4-0 derby win at rock bottom Salford City, Fish bagging a hat-trick.
The good news for Town is that Mossley's only defeat so far this season came at Seel Park when they were beaten 2-0 by Radcliffe Borough in their home opener.
But since then at their own ground they have beaten Warrington 4-1 in a league encounter and eased past North West Counties outfit Ramsbottom 3-1 in the preliminary round of the FA Cup.
That was the same score Town beat Silsden last time out, a result which ought to give Jim Vince's side a great deal of confidence ahead of their trip across the Pennines tonight.
Despite the dreadful Cougar Park pitch, Town produced some of their best football of the season so far to open up a two-goal interval lead.
And despite just stepping off the gas in the early stages of the second half, they were able to complete victory.
Ashley Stott bagged a first-half double to open his account with the Shaymen and is now on his way to the 30-goal target set by manager Vince.
And midfielder Jonathan Smith was a constant threat to the opposition as he gave another display that showed exactly why the manager rates him so highly.
The Shaymen could get into the top 10 if they win this evening and still have games in hand on the majority of teams around them.
It is still early days, but the team is beginning to bed down and it would be a big boost to see the team in the top half of the division going into Saturday's FA Cup first qualifying round trip to Northern League Ryton.
