After being in the trade just one year John and Julie Cooper are celebrating running the best pub in Calderdale!
The Murgatroyd Arms at Skircoat Green, Halifax, has won the Courier’s Pub of the Year competition.
Thousands of people voted for their favourite local but “The Murg” was victorious after several rounds of voting.
The couple both worked for the Lloyds Banking Group in Halifax and took redundancy to seek out a new career.
“The pub came up for sale and we thought we would give it a go,” said Mrs Cooper,
“We had never done anything like this before.”
The pub had a series of managers before Mr and Mrs Cooper took over.
“We closed for six weeks for refurbishment and the pub opened on July 15,” said Mrs Cooper.
“It was a baptism of fire.”
Gradually, the couple settled into busy pub life and the long hours and have reaped their rewards.
“We are thrilled to win and have had great support from our regular customers. They have been very supportive,” said Mrs Cooper.
The pub sells a range of hand-pulled beers and the couple started serving food in April which is doing well.
