Mystery as police find a plaque that dates from 1972

Police discovered the signage – commemorating the opening of a recreation centre in the 1970 – while searching a building Todmorden.

Officers from the Upper Valley neighbourhood policing team had gone to the property in Rochdale Road after arresting a 39-year-old man as part of an investigation into a smashed window in Todmorden town centre.

Inside, they discovered suspected cannabis plants, growing equipment and the plaque.

It marks the opening of a recreation centre in October 1972 by the then Mayor of Todmorden, Councillor Ellis Schofield.

The 39-year-old man who was has been released on bail pending further inquiries.

Anyone who has information about the plaque, which was found on Saturday, May 7, is being urged to get in touch with the police.
