AN old soldier is to get a new head and rifle as part of a scheme to restore a Calderdale war memorial.
As much as £7,000 could be spent on the statue in the centre of Mytholmroyd, which has been vandalised several times.
Royd Regeneration is seeking planning permission to restore the monument.
Secretary Jade Smith said the rifle had been broken and removed several times and replaced with a resin replica.
“His head was stolen at some stage and a replacement was quickly carved in time for the Remembrance Day service but a lot of people don’t think it is quite right.
“Fortunately, we have a mould of the original from 1922 which will be used by a stone carver to create a new one,” she said.
Local firms and individuals have contributed towards the cost.
