New homes on old play area

COUNCILLORS have approved plans for a new housing development on a children's playground.

Twelve houses will be built on the site of Sandhall Green, Highroad Well, which has fallen into disrepair in recent years.

The homes will not be linked to Pennine Housing but will all be availiable as rental properties.

They come into the category of affordable housing which has been a focus for the council recently and something they are looking to improve on.

Concern was raised by councillors of the loss of recreational space in the area but the developers have identified another area that can replace it.

Calderdale Council Planning Committee agreed to the plans at a meeting at Halifax Town Hall with a unanimous vote.

Coun David Hardy (Lib Dem, Elland) said: "This particular piece of land is becoming a fly-tipping area.

"I think the proposal is a very very good one and, in view of the lack of affordable housing in Calderdale, it gets my full support."
