The new Halifax & Calderdale Samaritans branch on Harrison Road has been officially opened by Stephen Hoddell, Chair of Samaritans.
The move from the old building in Hopwood Lane was possible due to a generous legacy from local businessman Harry Hamer.
The new Samaritans building was urgently needed, as there has been a significant increase in recent years of both calls to the helpline and in the numbers of visitors who wish to speak to a Samaritans volunteer face to face. The new premises has disabled access and nearby parking.
The branch has recently received a grant from Community Foundation for Calderdale for a new lift, which gives access all areas of the building.
Brenda Heyhoe, Director of Halifax Samaritans, said: “The new branch for Halifax Samaritans will allow us to be there for more local people who are struggling to cope. We are so grateful to Harry Hamer and all the other generous people who have given their time and money to provide that safe place to talk.”
