Katie Higgins can not only teach Zumba - she can sign it too.

The 22-year-old from Sowerby Bridge has been using British Sign Language to explain the choreography in Amanda Laycock’s Zumba sessions and enjoyed the classes so much, she has now qualified as a Zumba instructor herself.

Amanda, who won a Zumba unsung hero award for her work as an ambassador for the British Heart Foundation and the charity Zumbathons she has organised, said: “We wanted Katie to showcase her signing on stage, but whenever there was an instrumental section she would join in the Zumba.”

Katie, who has Down’s Syndrome, went to more classes with her mum, Mary, and decided to become an instructor herself.

Amanda said: “Katie is an inspirational young lady, and it has been such a joy and privilege to watch her grow in confidence and see her love for life, dancing and music, but most importantly her ability to inspire so many people around her, including me.”
