A fire-fighter from Halifax has been nominated for a Spirit of Fire Award in honour of his fundraising efforts.

Dominic Furby is station commander at Illingworth, Todmorden and Mytholmroyd station and has worked at four of the five stations in Calderdale.

The Spirit of Fire awards are now in their ninth year, with Dominic nominated in the Supporter of the Year category, which recognises individuals who have given support to the Fire Fighters charity.

In 2003 he started the Red Hot Dates calendar, which raises money for the Fire Fighters Charity, Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Prostate Cancer UK, Breast Cancer Care and the Laila Milly Foundation.

He said: “I was surprised when I heard about it. It’s really nice that people think you deserve something like this.

“I’ve been involved in fundraising for a number of years and the total raised must be over £100,000 by now.”

The winners will be announced at the Park Plaza hotel, London on Friday May 16.
