Halifax theatre company Northern Broadside’s critically acclaimed production of Rutherford & Son has been nominated twice at the 2013 Manchester Theatre Awards.

Northern Broadsides, based at Dean Clough, have been running for 22 years and artistic director Barrie Rutter has been nominated in the best actor in a touring production category for his role as John Rutherford and actress Catherine Kinsella is nominated for her role of Mary in the best actress category.

The nomination is Barrie’s first as an actor at the Manchester Theatre awards. In 1996 he won the best director at the Manchester Evening Awards for The Cracked Pot.

Catherine has been nominated twice at the Manchester Evening News Awards as best actress in a supporting role in Martha, Josie and the Chinese Elvis in 2009 and Merchant of Venice in 2008.

Directed by Jonathan Miller, Rutherford and Son tells the story of iron-fisted John Rutherford as he battles the rebellion of his eldest son and his daughter’s scandalous love-affair, while fighting to prevent the legacy of the family glassworks from shattering.

The winners are announced at Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre on March 7.
