This photo of class 2c at the J H Whitley Secondary School, Holmfield, Halifax, 1969-70, was sent in by Michael Smith, of Bank Edge Gardens, Illingworth, Halifax, pictured on the back row, second from the left.

The school, which opened in 1952 at the so-called School Base of four secondary schools, was named after John Henry Whitley, Halifax MP from 1900 to 1918 and Speaker of the House of Commons in the 1920s.

In 1986 the J H Whitley School merged with Sunnyside Secondary as Holmfield High and in 1994 the new school was merged again, this time with Ovenden High to form the ill-fated Ridings School, which has since closed. The Holmfield buildings, located bet-ween North Halifax Grammar and Holy Trinity Sercondary schools, were demolished and homes built on the site.
