An Ogden runner is just one marathon away from completing a gruelling 78-mile challenge.

John Thompson, from Old Mixenden Village, is running two marathons and two half marathons to raise money for children’s cancer charity Candlelighters.

In completing the Edinburgh marathon, the Leeds half marathon and the Great North Run, he has already covered 52 miles.

But when he takes on the Liverpool Marathon on October 16, he will finally complete the epic series.

John said he initially intended to run the Great North Run when he became aware of the Candlelighters charity.

“I didn’t get a ballot place for either the London Marathon or the Great North Run this year so I decided to run the Great North on behalf of Candlelighters,” he said.

“After initially only signing up for the Great North Run I decided to sign up for three more runs in order to raise more funds for them,” said John.

“I only got into running around four years ago but, having run a few 10ks and half-marathons, it’s fantastic to combine what I love doing with raising money for great causes.”

John is aiming to raise £400. To sponsor him, go to
