The high street is in severe decline, unable to compete with out-of-town shopping centres with free car parking and online shopping.
Recent closures have included Woolworths, JJB Sports, Comet and Jessops. In Administration are Clinton’s Cards, HMV and Blockbuster. Here in Halifax the row of unoccupied shops in Upper Broad Street are to be demolished to become a car park and the shops in Lower Broad Street have never been occupied since they were built several years ago. So what is Calderdale Council’s response to this decline in high street shopping? To demolish a perfectly good only 30-year old Library to build more high street shops across the road from the empty ones! You couldn’t make it up!
