It is clear that there is an infection around Westminster that is affecting good people.
I therefore hope that our Valley’s MPs Linda Riordan and Craig Whittaker can press for an end to complexity of MPs’ allowances, in favour of a basic salary to cover all staff and equipment, with standard rail fare on duty-travel, upgraded to ‘first’ where necessity for on-train work is honestly vouched for. As for accommodation, the State should acquire dwellings with a range of sizes for letting to provincial MPs at rentals covered by the salary. Those already with homes or premises in London would benefit from the ‘London Allowance’ effect of this provision.
