CALDERDALE’S beautiful parks feature heavily in the Yorkshire and Humberside Green Flag award winners announced today.
Seven local parks have reached the national standard which recognises well-managed, high quality areas.
Only Sheffield had more parks included from the region.
The park jewels of Calderdale are: Shibden Estate, Bailiff Bridge Memorial park, Centre Vale Park, Manor Heath Park & Jungle Experience, Ogden Water Country Park, People’s Park and Wellholme Park.
Cabinet spokeswoman Coun Pauline Nash (Con, Skircoat) said she was delighted.
“This demonstrates how Calderdale Council is working with local communities to improve their parks and I would like to congratulate everyone involved in this wonderful achievement,” she said.
Shibden has a volunteer programme, Bailiff Bridge has a community association working closely with the council, Centre Vale has volunteers submitting bids for improvements.
Manor Heath has volunteers involved in planting projects, Ogden has the Friends’ of Calderdale Countryside carrying out practical work, People’s Park has a gardening club and works on specific projects, and Wellholme Park has a friends’ group which local interest groups encouraged to become active in the management of the park.
Green Flag Plus Partnership chairman Phil Barton said all parks should achieve high standards.
“The importance of good-quality green spaces cannot be overestimated.
“They are central to the growth of our communities, both socially and economically.
“The Green Flag Award Scheme is essential in driving the standards of our parks and green spaces.”
