FAMILY and friends got together to mark what would have been the 21st birthday of a much-loved son who died in a car crash.

David Nicholson lost his life aged 19.

His family organised a fun day at Ovenden Rugby League Club in Cousin Lane in aid of the Firefighters Charity.

Mum Debbie said it was a fantastic day and not the first time they had raised money for the fire crews.

“They were the first people on the scene after the accident and after talking to them we found out that 75 per cent of their callouts are to road crashes. When you hear a siren, you automatically think they’re going to a fire.

“I just wanted to give something back. They couldn’t save him but they tried,” said Debbie.

As well as live music, there was also a barbecue, a rugby match and a pig race.

The day raised more than £1,000.
